Greg Sarris is the author of Grand Avenue, an award-winning collection of short stories, which he adapted for an HBO miniseries of the same name and co-executive produced with Robert Redford. His second novel, Watermelon Nights, was adapted for a play by the Santa Rosa Community College Theatre Arts Department. His third novel The Last Human Bear, was published in June 2026. His collection of traditional stories How a Mountain Was Made has been adapted for Word for Word Theatre productions throughout the Bay Area. He is also author of Mabel McKay: Weaving the Dream, and a collection of critical essays on American Indian literature, Keeping Slug Woman Alive: A Holistic Approach to American Indian Texts, which is used widely in college courses. His book reviews have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Greg is a lifetime National Book Critic Circle member, a member of the UC California Board of Regents and the Sundance Institute board and currently serving his seventeenth consecutive term as Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria.
