Our acclaimed Kidquake programs for children’s books; authors, illustrators, poets, and bookmakers provide readings, discussions, and workshops designed to fuel kids’ imagination. This morning’s two sessions, for kids in 1st and 2nd grades, begin at 10:15am and 11:15am. Featuring authors Mahogany L. Browne and Maggie Tokuda-Hall plus an activity led by the Randall Museum of Science, with workshops (by lottery) from author/illustrator of Ren’s Pencil Bo Lu (illustration) and author of A Year of Kites Monisha Bajaj (kite-making). Calling all teens, educators, and families! Take a breather after the busy school week at Chapter 510’s cozy space for creative writing. As part of their Write, Speak, Heal collaborative with Youth Speaks and Divine Radiance, join poet, playwright, organizer, and educator Mahogany L. Browne for an afternoon celebrating young people’s self-expression, resilience, and wellness. Browne will read from her National Book Award–longlisted collection of stories and poems A Bird in the Air Means We Can Still Breathe, which Publishers Weekly calls a “love letter to [a] resilient teen population as they adjust to a changed world.” Joining her will be Chapter 510 teaching artist Belinda Bellinger, with an opening performance by Youth Speaks poets. Followed by a conversation around creativity, healing, and resilience moderated by Alie Jones. Doors at 4pm.

Back by popular demand, with an all-new lineup! Sex and death are central human concerns, but older women poets often find themselves silenced or sidelined on the first of these subjects. Here, in an event curated by Rebecca Foust, five women aged 40 and better—Mahogany L. Browne, Prageeta Sharma, Jen Siraganian, Melissa Stein, and Barbara Jane Reyes—will share frankly erotic work that refuses to be muted or mooted and makes a bulwark of bodily sensuality against death, time, and our aging selves. Alongside the reading, emceed by poet Tracey Knapp, winemaker Emily Fernwood will be on site to introduce Osa Major wines, which will be available for purchase by the glass. This event will take place on Vintage Berkeley’s secret garden patio—dress accordingly! Doors at 5:30pm.
